MONTE AMIATA

Monte Amiata is located south of Siena, and is entirely crossed by the Via Cassia, which in antiquity was one of the major arteries of the stupendous road system created by the Roman Empire, to and from Rome. The Amiata is a mountain rich in waterways, wild animals and dark forests of beech and chestnut, a land of peasants and miners with a frank and frank face, bearers of stories and legends unknown or precluded to men of the plains. Above all Mount Amiata is - indeed it was, thousands of years ago - a large volcano whose eruptions have for centuries flooded the low surrounding hills of ash, lapilli and lava that, once condensed and layered on the ground, have become tuff, mark and emblem of an entire civilization, the Etruscan one. Now that the fear of an eruption has disappeared, the Amiata (1750mt s.l.m.) is also one of the most famous ski resorts in Tuscany. But once dissolved, in the spring, the snow is slowly absorbed by the aquifers and returned warm, very hot (from 37 to 45 ° C), source of springs that flow around the Monte, a sign that inside some volcanic activity, even if residual, it continues to survive. These thermal waters, rich in sulfur and other healing elements, were frequented by the aristocracy of the Roman Empire; we find them also mentioned in the travel notebooks of the merchants and pilgrims who crossed the Via Cassia in the Middle Ages and who immersed themselves in these springs to give relief to the legs and feet tormented by whole days, sometimes months, of tight march. The springs still flow today near almost every village, from Bagni di San Filippo, to Bagno Vignoni, from Santa Fiora to Saturnia. Each of these countries has developed a thermal water collection system that has allowed the birth of modern health centers, with swimming pools, saunas, massage rooms and so on; yet, for the more adventurous, there are still many springs, in the woods or in the open country, where everything has remained unchanged for thousands of years. If you plan a trip to Tuscany, especially during the cold winter months, do not miss the suggestion of these places; at the springs that are indicated along the roads, you will arrive only on foot; sometimes, as in Bagni di San Filippo, after crossing a long forest of oaks and chestnut trees

NATURAL SPAS

Immediately at the foot of the volcano lies the thermal spa of Bagni San Filippo probably the most beautiful and atypical, immersed in a wild and rugged place that looks up towards the summit of Amiata and down towards the rolling hills of the Val d' 'Orcia. Enclosed in a grove of cypress trees, fig trees, maples, pines and fir trees, the spa of San Filippo, with its fumes and vapors, recalls the representation of the Elysian fields of Böcklin in the Isle of the Dead and is particularly recommendable for its very rich sulphurous waters. A stone's throw from Radicofani, one of the most celebrated spas in Tuscany is Fonteverde, in San Casciano Bagni, with a trendy pool and a state-of-the-art wellness center. On the other side of the Val d'Orcia, how can we forget the enchanted place of Bagno Vignoni, elected by Caterina da Siena and Lorenzo dei Medici? In the province of Siena the Baths of Rapolano and those of Petriolo will still be remembered, the latter preferred - at the time - by the same Pio II, who also built the first buildings around the warm waters. Particularity of the place is that you can pass in a flash from the warmth of the puddles to the cool of the Farma and vice versa. Beautiful, but with cold mineral waters, even the spa of Sarteano, where a circular waterfall stands out, the work of a well-known Japanese designer. After the swim, you can always stop off to admire the delightful village and, above all, the splendid fresco by Beccafumi in the church of San Martino. And, of course, Chianciano Terme, with its healthy waters: in a novel of the 50s , Liala, setting some scenes in the most exclusive station of the time, describes the charming village of Chianciano, immersed in the moonlight, as if a stream of mercury from Amiata had come down to cover it. An important spa is also in Sant'Albino, a stone's throw from Montepulciano.

In the Grosseto area, in the heart of the Maremma, the very elegant thermal baths of Saturnia do not need to be mentioned, with one of the most amazing offers.

MEDIEVAL VILLAGES

Pope Pius II, in his Commentarii, emphasized "the beauty of the place, the comfort of the location and the amenities of the country", qualities appreciated by the many vacationers who choose it for their holidays. The village is remembered since 890 as a possession of the Abbey, of which it remained property for three centuries and beyond.

It passed to the Aldobrandeschi family, and in 1332 to Siena, finally in 1559, with the entire Senese, to Medici Tuscany. Castel del Piano is home to the Nasini family, painters active between the mid-seventeenth and the mid-eighteenth century, authors of works preserved in all corners of the Amiata. The Church of the Opera (or Propositura dei Santi Niccolò e Lucia), baroque but completed only in 1870, overlooks the square known as the Madonna. The interior, with a Latin cross and enlivened by ten chapels, is an authentic Nasini museum: the Nativity of Mary, the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, both by Giuseppe Nicola stand out. Beautiful also a wooden crucifix and the sixteenth century holy water font. Next to the first is the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, in turn rich in paintings, which is flanked by the Palazzo del Comune.

Going up to the village you pass next to the Clock Tower, we stop in the Piazzetta degli Ortaggi with a beautiful Loggia of sixteenth-century forms, then the Church of San Leonardo. At the end of the ancient center is the Piccina Church of the Blessed Sacrament. The large Piazza Garibaldi has an interesting fountain in the center, but it is dear to the locals, especially because the Palio is held on September 8 every year. It is more known as the Piazza Tonda (or the Storte). Nearby you can visit the Benedictine churches of Santa Lucia and San Biagio, which can be the destination of a pleasant walk in the direction of Amiata, the church of Santa Flora a Noceto and the ruins of the Franciscan convent of San Processo.
